Facets of a Muse

Examining the guiding genius of writers everywhere

Spring ahead into the fray #amwriting #amreading #mnweather

Maybe you’ve noticed I like to mention the weather on a regular basis. Part of that is the Minnesotan in me. Weather plays a pretty big role in our day-to-day business, especially in the winter. Now that Spring, my favorite season, is on its way, I’m starting to feel the pull of the outdoors in a big way.

This weekend is predicted to be close to 60 degrees F. Woo-hoo! Happy dance (but carefully in a dry spot, because EVERYTHING is pretty mucky).

My seeds haven’t started to sprout yet, but that might be because it’s a bit cool in the house. I don’t use warming pads, but I’m reconsidering that this year since we aren’t running the pellet stove/corn burner, which happens to be located near the seed starting station.

Walks are on the agenda for this weekend, among the other tasks of preparing for my trip to Left Coast Crime in San Diego and book marketing stuff like emailing libraries and bookstores and asking if they would consider an author event. And writing. That’s always on my list, but sometimes …

This next week will be filled with subbing at the library (last time for a while, I think, or at least until summer), our Sisters in Crime monthly meeting, and a flight from MSP to SAN. Then I get to enjoy a mystery conference with lots of other writers and readers. The weekend after I get back I have a book fair where I’m giving an hour-long workshop on writing mysteries. It’s at the end of the day, though, so we’ll see how many stick around for that.

I am looking forward to meeting one of the authors I love, another whom I need to ask to do a presentation at one of our meetings, and others I have met but haven’t seen for a while. Oh, and the weather!

I will, however, miss the Writers’ Institute in Madison, WI this year. Not because anything overlaps, but because I can only manage one conference a year. I didn’t expect to miss it as much as I do. I think that’s what happens when an event becomes like a family reunion, where you get to see all those people you only see that one time each year, but look forward to enjoying the time you’re there with them.

I know I’ve mentioned it before, but if you have an opportunity to go to a writers’ conference, go. Go to a conference at least once, whether it’s close or a state away. Or, hey, you could always come to the Writers’ Institute. This year I’m going to miss Jess Lourey as a keynote speaker. She grew up twenty miles from where I did.

And, you could meet my awesome writing teacher there! Her latest Door County Fudge Shop mystery just came out this week! I’m proud to say I helped brainstorm for Deadly Fudge Divas. There’s nothing quite like seven writers helping one of their own figure out the crime and plot of a whodunit.

I’m off to get organized for my busy week, but intend to squeeze in a few walks and some revising on Book 2, as well as my next class assignment. Sheesh. I think I’m going to try to get away for a personal writing retreat this year, maybe at my dad’s when he goes on his cruise with his brother, but maybe someplace else less, um, urban. More expensive, but better location.

Happy Writing! For those in the US, it’s spring forward weekend. Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead!

I write adult mystery with a touch of romance, mystery with extrasensory elements, contemporary fantasy, and epic fantasy, and I'm represented by the fabulous Cynthia Zigmund of Second City Publishing Services. My debut novel, "Murder in Plane Sight", has been released by Camel Press (an imprint of Coffeetown Press/Epicenter Press). In real life, I am a technical writer and empty-nester with a wonderful hubby, three cats (what writer doesn't have cats??), and more chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits than any garden should have to deal with. My garden, our hobby farm, and Nature's annual seasons are some of my muses.

  1. Ugh, I forgot it was spring forward weekend. This is NOT my favorite weekend, but thanks for the reminder. It’d be embarrassing to be late to everything on Monday morning.:-) Gorgeous kitty photo!

  2. Have a safe trip and a fabulous conference! It sounds like a very busy time, but those can be great, too. Hopefully you’ll get lots of stimulation (both from the conference and being outdoors) for writing creativity (your Muse paid me to say that.. 😉 ) – Have a great week!

  3. Nice roundup, Julie. Always interesting. I cx a conference I’d been waiting forever to attend. Good ol’ California declared a state of emergency, thanks to the corona virus, and the conference was here so, guess I’ll wait. There are usually 15,000 people. Sigh.

    • Sorry to hear about the conference, but 15k people?! Wow. As far as I know, they aren’t planning any changes to LCC, so still moving forward with that. I’m trying to get into the habit of washing my hands longer 😀

Have a great weekend, Jacqui! Stay healthy!

  4. You sound very busy, Julie:) I just missed our local Writers Conference due to other obligations, but I will get to one! Happy to hear spring is making an appearance for you. Winter left here in January and we are hoping it comes back to catch us up on some rain. I always worry with our well and fires. This is the time change that hurts the most. I hope someday we pick a time and keep it! Have a great rest of weekend and week.

    • Today is gorgeous–blue sky, 60 degrees, and lots of mud. Well, the mud isn’t the gorgeous part. Windy, too, but that helps things dry out. We got a lot of rain last fall and a decent amount of snow, so they’re warning people about flooding already. It’s shaping up to a slow melt, so that will help.

      Have a great week, Denise!

  5. SD! SD! SD! SD! Zoey is now thinking, “How come you and the dragons get to go see Betsy but I don’t?” Mwawr meow, Zoey! I’ll miss you too!

  6. Good luck at the conference, and thanks for mentioning my book debuted this past week. Can’t wait to see your next book out in the universe. I’ve had a sneak peek at a few pages and they’re a great teaser.

    • Thanks, Chris! I have to say my writing teacher has given me invaluable lessons to help me advance my craft 😀 😀 I ordered your book; can’t wait to read it!

Have fun at WI! I would love to be there–I’ll be thinking of you, and Laurie, and Lisa, and Martha, and …

      Have a great week!

  7. I think weather is fascinating to many of us, Julie. It’s one thing that we still have no control over. Enjoy the arrival of spring. Woo hoo!

  8. Wow, you have tons going on! And everything sounds like fun. There is a conference in my (semi) area this year and I’m considering going. I have to take a hard look at the dates and see if I can make it happen. In the meantime, I have a Local Author Event I’m attending as a participant next month. And I am so freaking excited for spring. It can’t happen fast enough for me.

I went walking today but it was still a tad on the chilly side. Tomorrow, there are whispers of a possible 70 degrees. If that happens, I will be outside every chance I get. The good thing about working in a large building, is that I can use outside paths to reach other parts of the building rather than taking the indoor hallways. Yipeee!

    • Yes! SPRING! The bright blue sky and sunshine lure me out for a walk every chance I get. Now that things are dried up more, and less muddy, I’m soaking in the weather before the bugs come out 😀

Still a little chilly, but spring is almost here! My seedlings are surfacing and seem to be enjoying the new lights.

      Have a great week, Mae!

  9. Spring?! Already … we have a couple of weeks until the clocks go forward and can look forward to daylight lasting longer into the evenings!

Wow! A busy schedule for you and I hope you have it all noted down … I started to become confused.😀 Have a brilliant time and a pity about missing one conference but that is totally understandable. I love how they ‘an event becomes like a family reunion’! That is fantastic and you’ve sold me on conferences!

Good luck with the seedlings … hope they have enough heat!

    • Spring can’t come fast enough, in my opinion. It’s my favorite season! Warm days, cool nights, and everything turns that fresh new green of spring. The seedlings have started coming up, so it must be warm enough. I figure if the house is at a comfortable temp, then it should be okay for the seedlings.

And yes, take an opportunity to go to a conference. Even with the one measly day at LCC, I met some great people!

      Have a great week, Annika!
