Facets of a Muse

Examining the guiding genius of writers everywhere

Getting closer … #amreading #mystery

Wave if you survived the deep freeze *waves*  This weekend will be above freezing according to the weather people. Yippee–until the freezing rain hits on Monday. And the cold returns (but not as brutal as this past week).

Hoo-boy. Or as they say in the Great White North–uff da!

I’ve been working on all that marketing and promo stuff that goes along with a book release, like planning the cover reveal, writing posts for a release tour, waiting impatiently for the book listings to be completed …

I’ve been paying attention and taking notes on the stuff some of my writer blogging friends do for their book releases. Now that I’m doing it, I wonder how on earth they find the time. And writing besides.

Did you figure out how to get more hours in the day? I mean, seriously.

Then again, I’m spending a lot of time with Canva to put some promo stuff together and a lot of time poking around WordPress to set up my author site. I have a landing page–woo-hoo! Sure, it says it’s under construction, but there’s a button that comes here to the blog, and another button that lets the visitor sign up for my newsletter–I just got that working. Woo-hoo!

Wait. Now I have to figure the whole newsletter thing out. Plus start setting up events. Plus order bookmarks and other swag through my publisher. Plus pray I can get physical books by the first weekend in April in time for the Writers’ Institute.

Oh, and I need to plan the workshop I’m conducting in March for our local Sisters in Crime chapter. Oh, yeah, and the two presentations for the Writers’ Institute.

And it’s February already?! Where did I put my duplicator?

I have my cover, and I just caught this great post on Terry Odell’s site. So, cover mockup it is. Pretty cool, actually. Thanks, Terry!

Heh. You didn’t really think I would show you, did you? Well, I was going to, but that unfinished listing still bugs the crap out of me. And I don’t have images ready to put up everywhere yet. Now that I have my nifty 3d cover mockup, guess what I’ll be doing this weekend.

I went through the galley proof this week as well. Another step closer.

Six weeks and counting. And my publisher still hasn’t finished the Amazon listing. *grumble* Since it is Amazon, and I have an Author Central account now, I’m going to ask my agent if it would be kosher for me to at least add the cover and the search terms. On the bright side, the BN listing is almost complete. Still missing the ebook on both sites. Just. Frustrating.

So, another teaser to tide you over (and I thank Staci for giving me the idea of these little tidbits (check the comments for last week’s post if you’re curious)) Why do I feel like rubbing my hands together and saying “mwahahahaha”?

Getting closer.

And of course:

Author: Julie Holmes, author

A fiction writer since elementary school (many years ago), and NaNoWriMo annual participant for over a decade, I have been published in small press magazines such as "Fighting Chance" and "The Galactic Citizen". I write adult mystery with a touch of romance, mystery with extrasensory elements, contemporary fantasy, and epic fantasy, and I'm represented by the fabulous Cynthia Zigmund of Second City Publishing Services. My debut novel, "Murder in Plane Sight", has been released by Camel Press (an imprint of Coffeetown Press/Epicenter Press). In real life, I am a technical writer and empty-nester with a wonderful hubby, one cat (what writer doesn't have cats??), two dogs, six chickens, and more chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits than any garden should have to deal with. My garden, our hobby farm, and Nature's annual seasons are some of my muses.

  1. There’s so much to do when you’re getting ready for a book release, isn’t there? It’s dizzying, if you let it be. I always like to remember to eat that elephant one bite at a time. Stay warm!

    • You are so right, Margot! I’m trying to remember to take small steps because those are so much more manageable. Not sure what elephant tastes like? Chicken? 😀

This weekend will be like a tropical heat wave compared to this past week. Looking forward to above freezing temps! Enjoy your weekend!

  2. Julie, I wish I had a miracle advice for you but even so, would you take it? 😊 . Sometimes we just do things
our way and I think you know pretty well what you need to do.
O.k.,switch off other media whilst you get all this ready and book can go.
    Don’t do early spring cleaning.

    You will get there fine.

    • Wait. Did you just say I don’t have to do spring cleaning? Yay! 😀 It’s kinda like opening the dreaded closet where you’ve been shoving stuff for years and now have to clean it. One piece at a time 😀

      Have a wonderful weekend, Miriam!

  3. I wonder how authors find the time too, Julie. Despite your anxiety, you seem to be on top of everything – probably a result of purchasing a duplicate (great cartoon). And thanks for the link to Terry’s site. I saved that one. You’re getting close. Good luck!

  4. Yeah!😀 First, I’m a huge Calvin & Hobbs fan and smiled when I saw this picture … don’t we all need one of those! If I’m right, he gets into a right heap of trouble thereafter … maybe we would as well and that’s why there isn’t one! So just lots of work and enough hours in the day ceased to exist when one reached adulthood!😀

Julie, you seem to have lots sorted. Well done with a new website and linking them up. Can’t wait to see it. Also bookmarks are a terrific idea and so popular. I can’t thank you enough for the mock-up link – I’ve been wandering how everyone is producing these wonderful image of their books. I look forward to trying these out.

Well, glad the polar vortex is not quite so brutal any more, it’s sounded terrifying … here much of the country ground to a halt with an inch of snow. Honestly!

Happy weekend, and enjoy working on all your writerly matters. Good luck for April launch – not long now!
    hugs x ❤️

    • Thanks, Annika! I know, Calvin is great (I always liked Hobbes better) and so much the troublemaker, but always fun! I finally took the plunge and actually paid for a page building tool for my author website. I figured the paid version had all the stuff in it I was hunting around for freebies. Not to mention the discount from my hosting site. So, hopefully less time poking around, more time actually building stuff. Hopefully.

It’s above freezing here today, and man, after this past week, it feels like a heatwave. Went out to get the mail, and just had to revel in the relative warmth. Something is wrong when three degrees above freezing is warm. Just sayin’ 😀

The launch is coming up fast! And I know it’ll be here way before I feel like I’m ready for it. One step at a time; it’s the only way I can keep a handle on everything. I always remember the tortoise–maybe not slow, more like walking pace wins the race.

      Have a wonderful weekend!

  5. You’ve got it together, Julie. Good job!

  6. Good grief I’m impressed. I think I just ignored about half of those, which makes my upcoming Book release so much easier. Sigh.

  7. Wow. Bonus Zoey! And here I was so engrossed by the post I didn’t even see it coming this time. Your struggle is real. And it makes me quake because, oddly, with some luck and good fortune, I hope to be in your sorta awful/sorta great situation some day. Somehow the non-fic isn’t this complicated. I guess it’s a good stepping stone. Still, I hope you’re putting together a manual for debut authors of all these steps we need to take. Uff-da indeed! (I hear that a lot from my husband. One of my closest friends locally is also from MN. Uff-da!)

    • Wait, what? You didn’t scroll to the bottom to check for a cat pic? Really? Whew! I do get the impression non-fic is different, and I sometimes wonder what non-fic I could pull together just to give people something free. It seems like that’s the deal: sign up for my newsletter, and you can have this for free.

A manual? Hmm. Once I figure all this stuff out (ha!), I might have to do a blog series on the process.

      Heh. Uff-da!

When’s your writing conference? This month, right? Wander is getting excited to spend some time in the ocean 😀

      Have a great weekend, Betsy!

      • The conference is Feb. 15-17! Buckle up, dragons!
I did, actually, do the scroll thing once. Maybe twice, to check for Zoey. I am ashamed.
The manual via blog posts would be much appreciated by many of us in the trenches. You know, since once your book is out you’ll have so much extra time to help us poor schlubs. 😉
I have to do an on-line LIVE book launch with the publisher. That’s… uhh… great? 😮

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah, extra time? Still need to do yet another draft of book 2. But, since other writers have been kind enough to share some of the things they learned …

A LIVE book launch?! Woo-hoo! You’ll do great! I mean, you did do a TV interview after all. You’ll be fine 🙂

And my book dragon is starting to collect turtle Chex Mix. I asked her why, and she looked at me like I had two heads. Then she said, “Me. Betsy. Turtle Chex Mix. DUH!” I haven’t seen her around since. 😉

      • Your book dragon and I are going to get along just fine. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • Then Blue Pearl storms into my office and demands to know why the book dragon is going with you to the conference when she’s supposed to tag along with you in your bag. Um, so you might end up with all three dragons. Don’t worry, Wander can take care of herself. I’d just keep an eye on the other two. Not that they don’t get along (well, mostly). If it’s any consolation, BP said she’d rather ride in your pocket anyway. With goldfish crackers. Rainbow ones.

        Just a heads up. 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      • Adding rainbow goldfish to my shopping list now! I will totally be the hit of the conference with my little stowaways.

  8. Its overwhelming all things you need to do with a book release…I have to get going on my next one, too. All you can do is take it one step at a time:) Yes, if we could duplicate during this time that would be great…lol

I have never been under 0 weather so I can’t imagine the bite of the cold you just went through.

Looking forward to seeing your cover! Have a great weekend.

    • Yes, one step at a time gives me much less opportunity to trip over my own feet 😀 As for below 0 weather; be thankful. Think walking outside and the air hurting your face. And when it gets that cold, it almost hurts to breathe. Then again, we don’t have tropical pests like crocodiles or boa constrictors 😀

Here’s hoping my publisher gets the listings fixed soon. Or I’ll do it (but they should; they didn’t finish them to begin with).

      Have a great weekend, Denise!

  9. Hi Julie, there is so much to do, but you seem to know exactly what you have to do. You’ve given me some ideas on how to promote my father’s book. Best wishes in the coming weeks to you as you prepare for your release! (and we survived the cold snap here – hope we don’t see another one of those!)

    Liked by 1 person

    • Glad to help! And yes, there is SOOO much to do. I keep reminding myself that it’s a bunch of steps. If I break it down, it doesn’t seem quite so daunting! And yes to no more double-digit-below-zero cold snaps this season.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  10. I want a duplicator, too. (Can you hear the whiny tone in my voice?)

I love the teaser, and I’m dying to see the cover. I know you’re stressing, but it really seems like you have all your ducks in a row. (Gentle reminder here that I’m happy to host you when you’re ready.)

The cat pic put a smile on my face. Stay warm!

  11. Whew! I’m tired just thinking about all the things you have to do, Julie. But the good news is you can only do one thing at a time and little by little I know you’ll get there. Stay warm!

  12. Your release is right around the corner and the anticipation is building! I can’t wait. I also loved your teaser (and the pic of Zoe goes without saying). You sound busy, busy, but that’s to be expected. I look forward to showcasing Murder In Plane Sight on my blog when you’re ready!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yes, busy! I was planning to get a bunch of stuff done this weekend, until a migraine ambushed me. Damn head. It’s finally letting up, so I can get a few things done yet before tomorrow and back to work.

I will definitely get in touch when I’ve got things ready for the release. THANK YOU!

  13. Hope you kick that migraine to the curb and feel better!
