Facets of a Muse

Examining the guiding genius of writers everywhere

Here come the holidays

Oh boy. Less than two weeks until Christmas. And the solstice.

I think I’m looking forward to the solstice more; the thought of more minutes of daylight per day sounds better than Christmas music on every single radio station all day long.

Kids are home from college for the next month, so the house has suddenly gotten smaller. Funny how that works 😉  The week before Christmas (man, do I have all my Christmas shopping done??) will be a blend of work and baking cookies, doing whatever shopping I have left (I better check my list 😮 ), and trying to fit in some writing. Oh, and the ever-present cleaning, which I neglected all through NaNo, and the past few weeks due to trying my hand at creating FB covers, and blog headers, and twitter posts, etc in preparation for when I get my final cover.

In fact, all I want for Christmas is my cover. (Don’t get me started. I’ll be nudging my publisher on Monday.)

Also, I’ll be jumping into the rest of the fray when it comes to book stuff: email list, newsletter, website, and all the other stuff that goes with it.

So, short post this week, and next week will be a holiday post, so enjoy this time with family, friends, pets, and hey, take some time for yourself. There’s nothing like a quiet walk in the woods to soothe a creative soul. And the hoarfrost we had earlier this week was that quiet sort of beauty.

Have a great week!

A fiction writer since elementary school (many years ago), and NaNoWriMo annual participant for over a decade, I have been published in small press magazines such as "Fighting Chance" and "The Galactic Citizen". I write adult mystery with a touch of romance, mystery with extrasensory elements, contemporary fantasy, and epic fantasy, and I'm represented by the fabulous Cynthia Zigmund of Second City Publishing Services. My debut novel, "Murder in Plane Sight", has been released by Camel Press (an imprint of Coffeetown Press/Epicenter Press). In real life, I am a technical writer and empty-nester with a wonderful hubby, three cats (what writer doesn't have cats??), and more chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits than any garden should have to deal with. My garden, our hobby farm, and Nature's annual seasons are some of my muses.

  1. Wishing you well with that cover, Julie! It is hard to keep the focus on writing when everything is so hectic, isn’t it?

  3. Kids coming home–love it. Enjoy these years where they’re in college and return home for holidays. Maybe summer. Suddenly, they have their own homes! I’m nudging my book cover designer too. My fault she got delayed!

    • You, too? I suspect I had a hand in the delay, but I expected this to move a shade faster. I mean, it’s been, like, three weeks since I saw the first final draft of the cover (which I accepted). Sigh.

      Have a great week, Jacqui!

  4. You’re inspiring, Julie. You make me want to do some sprucing up around here too. I hope you have a fabulous holiday and I can’t wait to see your cover! And the lengthening days are mighty welcome! ❤

    • I managed to get some cleaning done today. Woo-hoo! Alas, no writing, though. I can’t wait to show off the cover! Well, I guess I am waiting. And waiting…. I cannot wait until the days start getting longer. This getting dark before 5pm stuff just makes me think it’s later than it really is.

Enjoy your week before Christmas, Diana!

  5. Beautiful picture! Hope you get everything done. Sounds like my week. I thought I was ready but no idea now and lots of cleaning mixed in. Hope you have a good week filled with some pre holiday magic…and cant wait to see your cover:)

  6. Julie, enjoy the holidays with your family. Even though the house seems smaller, and your time taken up with other things. Those college years and coming home go by very fast, then who knows where those kids go. Excited to see your new cover. Hope it’s just what you want. Happy Holidays and Writing! 🎄📚 Christine

    • Thanks, Christine! Everything seems to be going faster these days. And I keep forgetting Christmas is next week–I keep thinking I have more time. Then I look at the calendar 😮

Have a wonderful week! Happy Holidays to you!

  7. My house is smaller now, too. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though. Thanks for sharing the picture of your grove. It’s lovely.

Good luck with the cover. And if we don’t cross online paths again before Christmas, have a wonderful one!

  8. Lovely photo, Julie – there is a lot of beauty in our northern winters. I hope your Christmas wish comes true and lives up to your expectations. If it doesn’t, I suspect your publisher will need to deal with a disgruntled muse. 😉 I am taking a break over the holidays so will be in and out of wordpress. Merry Christmas!

    • There certainly is, Molly. I love that whisper of the snow when it falls, and it’s even better when in the woods. Heh, I never thought to sic my Muse on them. Knowing him, he’ll claim that is not part of his job description, and point me in Grumpy’s direction.

      Enjoy your holidays, Molly!

  9. I can’t wait to see your cover!
All the promo stuff can be time consuming, but it goes hand-in-hand with writing, I need to get busy with my own for End of Day and have done zero so far. *sniffle*
    Wishing you joyous Christmas, Julie!

  10. Have a great time with all the Christmas preparations and perhaps your children will lend a hand. The photo is idyllic and just as winter should be – enjoy your walks in the depth of such beauty!

I hope you had some good news about your book cover … did you tell them you have lots of friends here keen to get a peek?! 😀

Oh, I’m looking forward to the days becoming longer once again, although whilst the tree and all the lights are up it is cosy & light. January is another story!

    • Thanks, Annika! My daughter helped me bake some cookies last night, and she’s keen to bake the cutout cookies, hopefully today while I’m at work. We even toured the town a few nights back to get a look at all the light displays. That is my favorite part of Christmas–all the lights!

Happy Holidays to you and your family, Annika! Enjoy!

  11. Can you believe I’m just now reading this? Finally turned in the second draft, and suddenly I’m like, Whoa. What do I do with myself now? Catch up on blog posts, of course! Have a great time with the kids!!

    • No worries! I’m just getting around to catching up. Had family gatherings this weekend. So good to see family, yet there’s that element of: man, I could be writing instead of enjoying the great food and chaotic atmosphere. Kidding! I got to see my sister and her fam–she’s in WI way over on the Milwaukee side and only gets back to MN a couple times a year.

Congrats on getting your second draft turned in! And I’m sure you will come up with some great ways to use all that free time you have now. Have a wonderful Christmas!

  12. So nice to see family! My parents are in NM, were supposed to be here by now, but my dad has the flu. I texted my mom twice this morning for an update, but no response. Starting to wonder if she’s sick now too and they’ll never make it. :/
I was scrolling through my in-box looking for something and saw a request for a guest blog post that was sent to me a couple months ago… I guess I could work on that!! Though I also need to get my materials ready for the writer’s conf. Advanced reader subs due Jan 15. Once I send those in, no changes possible. Eep! So glad for you to have all this part done already!!!

    • If your folks are sick, hopefully they will get better soon! Yes, you could work on a guest post. And I’m always willing to have guests as well. Let me know if you’re up to doing another 😀

You could always supervise gingerbread construction. Or holiday shenanigans 😀

      Merry Christmas, Betsy!
